Sub-junior boys top seed Shaun Rebello registered a thrilling 3-2 win against Aditya Dhakappa to advance to the pre-quarterfinals of the Mumbai District Ranking Table Tennis Championships at the Matunga Gymkhana on Thursday.

Rebello survived a five-setter and overcame Aditya 11-7
6-11 11-6 8-11 12-10 in a nail biting finish. The Maharashtra No.1 was off to a good start and won the first game but Aditya was back in the match by winning the next one. Rebello won the third and should have wrapped up the match in the following game but a set of unforced errors and lack of fitness on his part stretched the match into the fifth game. Rebello saved a match point and bounced back with two straight points to win the final game.

Aditya was undaunted by Rebello’s reputation and fought hard till the end before going down in the decider. Former table tennis champion, Kamlesh Mehta, was all praise for Rebello. “This was one of the most exciting matches of the day. Rebello had to sweat it out to win. Aditya was a very good opponent and it is good to see youngsters with so much potential in them,” he said.
