The array of Indian professionals in the Avantha Masters tournament is testimony to the growth of golf in India.

On the one hand, you have a thoroughbred like Jeev Milkha Singh with a first international win way back in 1994 while on the other you have a caddie-turned-professional like Chinnaswamy Muniyappa, who struggled through the system to clinch an Asian Tour title late last year.

In between are a host of names big and small, new and old, who hope to succeed at the 1.5 million- euro event sanctioned jointly by the Asian Tour, the European Tour and the Professional Golfers’ Tour of India (PGTI).

A prize purse of nearly Rs10 crore has ensured the presence of the trinity which has not just won 25 titles together but has also helped India hold the record of producing the most number of Asian Tour Order of Merit champions. “It is always nice to win at home and I will try to do my best. I have spent more days in the recent past in the hospital than on the fairways but I am feeling good about my form,” said Jeev. “This tournament raises the bar for Indian golf and gives me one more chance to play at such a high level at home,” said Jyoti Randhawa.
