RMV Gurusaidutt can finally heave a sigh of relief. The second seeded Indian not only won a title after four years but also registered his first ever win against compatriot B Sai Praneeth. Gurusaidutt avenged his loss in the Tata Open India International Challenge final last year by going one better and bagging the men’s singles title at CCI courts.

The 22-year-old, who has a 0-3 record against Praneeth, managed to break the deadlock on Sunday by winning 21-19 21-12, his first trophy since the Bahrain International Challenge in 2008. “It is a big win for me as I finally got to beat Praneeth and also end my title drought. I have lost to him thrice in the past, at the senior nationals, PSPB and All-India ranking tourney in Gujarat. This win has done wonders to my confidence. I have been reaching the quarterfinals and semis but have been unable to turn them into wins. Today, I trusted my fitness and didn’t experiment with my game. My drop shots were effective and I was able to push the pace too,” said Gurusaidutt.

In the women’s singles, the CCI proved to lucky again for PC Thulasi as she bagged her second Tata Open title by beating Indonesia’s Febby Angguni 21-15 21-13. The fifth seeded Indian, who won the event in 2010, claimed her maiden title of the year and kept her unbeaten record against Angguni in tact. “CCI is indeed lucky for me. Last year when this event was held at NSCI, I lost in the semis itself. Now I am all pepped up heading into the Syed Modi tournament,” said Thulasi.

Results: Final: Singles: Men: 2-RMV Gurusaidutt (IND) bt 4-B Sai Praneeth (IND)  21-19 21-12; Women: 5-PC Thulasi (IND) bt Febby Angguni (INA) 21-15 21-13
