Mumbai: The Indian Board does not seem to be too excited about the International Cricket Council (ICC) president David Morgan's suggestion of crunching a Test match into four days. Board of Control for Cricket in India officials say that a decision to that effect cannot be taken in a hurry.
"I'm not aware of any such discussion and I don't go by the media reports anyway," BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said. The Board secretary, however, agreed that there is a perception in the ICC that there is a need to galvanise Test cricket.
Another BCCI official said that the Board has actually not given serious thought to the suggestion. "We will look into the matter soon. May be at our technical committee meeting," Prof Ratnakar Shetty, the chief administrative officer of the BCCI said. The Board's policy stand towards a four-day Test match could be made at the meeting. The technical committee, headed by Sunil Gavaskar, will meet in Mumbai on July 8.
The ICC president recently told an Indian magazine that one of the options to make Tests more interesting is to reduce the match duration to four days.
"A thought that many people have, that we are examining is whether Test match cricket can be played over four days rather than five," Morgan said and then went on to add: "I would be very surprised if within a year you haven't seen some significant changes in Test match cricket."
Meanwhile, the ICC said it was not a suggestion by Morgan. "He was only indicating one of the various possibilities. There is a feeling to reform Test cricket and he was only citing one of the possibilities," an ICC spokesman said.
He, however, confirmed that there has not been a discussion at any ICC forum on such a proposal. "The ICC has not had any discussion on that matter," he added.
