St Sebastian SC, Chembur, had a field day as they thrashed Sachivalaya Gymkhana 6-0 in the MDFA Division II league at St Xavier's Ground, Parel.
Sebastian SC dominated from the start, scoring in the 17th minute through a penalty that was duly converted by Rohan Das. From there on, Sebastian Boy’s never slackened the intensity and just sunk their opponents with a series of field goals.
Rylan Soraes scored the second and third goal in the 19th and 26th minute. By the end of the first-half, Sebastian SC were already up 4-0. “We were playing as a team that was out there to win,” said Russell D’souza. D’souza, who netted in a goal in the first-half, struck in the second as Sebastian Boy’s took an insurmountable 5-0 lead.
The Chembur team changed their strategy in the second half. “We realised that we were running too much thus tiring ourselves. So we decided that in the second half we’ll just pass the ball more,” said D’souza, 23.
It wasn’t that their play was entirely free of blemish. Soraes, eyeing a hat-trick, refused a pass, depriving his side of a possible scoring opportunity. He faced the consequences, though, and was called off the field immediately by his coach. “I got a bit selfish and wanted to score my hat-trick,” the 21-year-old admitted. “It was wrong on my part.”
Even a hopelessly one-sided match as this had its amusing moments. Sebastian SC goalkeeper, board of being stationed at one place, decided to score himself. The move nearly backfired as Sachivalaya Gymkhana gained possession of the ball. But such was their day, they couldn’t even seize this opportunity and returned goalless.
St Sebastian SC are all geared up for their next game. “Like today, we’ll play a safe game, but definitely there will be some change in our strategy,” said D’Souza.
