Tenability was an issue associated with P Chidambaram. There were questions if his continuation as minister in the UPA government was tenable till a Delhi court put the matter to rest on Saturday. A similar issue is likely to dog Sourav Ganguly.

Having led Sahara Pune Warriors out of the Indian Premier League (IPL), there are question marks if Ganguly’s continuation as chairman of the technical committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is tenable.

Ganguly has been busy even as the BCCI is waiting with bated breath for an appointment with the former India skipper. On Saturday, he showed up at the auction, only to leave the place in a hurry. He was seen with the officials of the Sahara team which pulled the plug on the IPL. Ganguly’s contribution to Sahara’s decision to pull out of the IPL, which has plunged the league into chaos, is not known yet. However his role, surely, is not going unnoticed.

There may not be any repercussions immediately, but his position in the BCCI cannot be guaranteed anymore.

Ganguly met some BCCI officials in Bangalore on Saturday but there was no discussion about his availability. “Anything can happen in the BCCI,” said a board insider hinting at the likely role of Ganguly in Pune Warriors’ decision. “What we can do?” he said.
Board officials didn’t have time to discuss about his availability.

“We will speak to him when he is free. We need to urgently hold a meeting of our technical committee,” said the official.

Meanwhile, regardless of whether Ganguly hangs on to his BCCI position, Saturday’s developments have spelt doom for his IPL aspirations.

Ganguly, who played in the Ranji Trophy to make himself fit for the IPL, was supposed to lead the Pune team in the absence of Yuvraj Singh. Sahara’s pullout has put paid to his hopes.
