Kanpur: Kumar Sangakkara may say that he does not have a set line-up in the spin department and that the team might play all three slow bowlers, but the fact remains that Muttiah Muralitharan is their king-pin and most likely to help the team clinch their first Test victory in India.
"Murali is a match-winner all the time, but he gets good support from other spin bowlers," Sangakkara said on the eve of the second Test at Green Park. But Sangakkara conceded that irrespective of what the combination is, Murali is more likely to win matches for the side than any other bowler.
"He is a legend and it is natural that we are always depending on him more than others. There always are huge expectations from him, which I feel is very natural," said the skipper.
Muralitharan, who is the most successful bowler in Tests for almost two years and now has a tally of 786 wickets in 130 matches with an astounding 22 10-wicket match hauls, had failed to cast an impression on an unhelpful Motera pitch. The spinner from Kandy, who this year also became the leading wicket-taker in one-dayers, bagged three for 97 in the first innings and came a cropper in the second while conceding as many as 124 runs.
"I don't think you can judge any bowler on the basis of how he bowled in Ahmedabad. I do not agree with the view that he is struggling. I would rather say that he is trying to find himself in a new and different way," said Sangakkara.
