Sahara, Jaypee in fray for IPL teams

The Cricket Centre has been wearing a quiet look lately. There have been no long cavalcades, no big security entourage nor large crowds. It has been business unusual at the office of the Board of Control for Cricket in India these days.

The business of the BCCI, however, is set to go up what with the Indian Premier League all set for an expansion. The question is how much money will go to the coffers of the BCCI on March 7, the day when the IPL will announce the winning bids for the two new teams.

The reserve price for the new teams is $225 million but some estimates suggest that winning bid could be between $300m and $ 350m. Converted into Indian currency, that is somewhere between Rs 1500-1800 crores. It is not known how many bidders are in fray but according to sources in the IPL, about eight to 10 tender forms have been sold. The last date for the submission of the bid is Friday.

DNA has learnt that Adani group of Ahmedabad, Sahara, Jaypee Group and Videocon are among those who have purchased the forms.

Among others in fray are a group fronted by Kerala-based Malayalam super star Mohan Lal, a media house from North India and a consortium of business houses from Pune. Contrary to earlier reports, Bollywood stars and English Premier League clubs have not yet ‘come forward.’

A suave and influential Union minister is believed to be in the contention and sources suggest he could be tying up with a business house for the Ahmedabad franchise.

The Marylebone Cricket Club is understood to be looking for partners but it could not be confirmed if the famous London club is looking for a partnership with a new team or with an existing one.

The MCC, in its bid to renovate the hallowed Lord’s Cricket Club, is hoping for a big-ticket association that can fetch them big money. On Thursday, the MCC members were involved in a meeting to discuss the issue.

Cyrus Poonawala, famous stud farm owner from Pune, is contemplating buying an existing team in stead of going for a new one. “Tough conditions like submission of bank guarantee for 10 years have been laid. The guarantee could be for about Rs 1500 crore. So I’m looking to buy an existing team so that I would not have to pay the guarantee,” the racing magnet told this newspaper. He confirmed that he has purchased a tender document but said he is undecided whether he should submit it on Friday.
