Rohit Sharma may have made his way back into the national side but the young Mumbai batsman will have to pull up his socks if he were to have a chance to cement his place in the India side, feels Dilip Vengsarkar.
The former chairman of selectors, who had first spotted the talented Mumbai cricketer, says the 22-year-old has got a lifeline and he should use it to the fullest. “He has got the potential to play at the international level. But what is the use of having talent if you are not able to convert it into performance at the highest level,” Vengsarkar said while speaking DNA on the sidelines of a prize distribution function on Saturday evening.
Rohit was recalled into the ODI side after five months on Friday. He is part of the squad for the tri-series in Bangladesh next month.
Vengsarkar also cautioned the stylish batsman not to get carried away by ‘other pleasures.’ “Rohit is getting his chances and hence he should become more focused and target on cementing his place in the India side. He should not get carried away by other pleasures. Instead, he should concentrate on his game.”
The veteran of 116 Tests further said that Rohit should grab this chance with both hands. “There are many youngsters waiting in the wings with good performances at the domestic level. I think this is the right time for Rohit to grab this opportunity,” he added.
Rohit was dropped from the ODI side after below par performances in the World T20 in England followed by a poor outings in the Caribbean. For the record, Rohit scored a classy triple hundred against Gujarat at the Brabourne recently. Before that, he had scored an innings-saving century on a turning track against an experienced Railways attack led by Murali Kartik.
