Robin Uthappa was on Friday slapped with 100 per cent fine on match fee for throwing the ball at an opposition player. The Karnataka skipper was booked under Level II offence and penalised under section 2.7 by match referee Rajendra Jadeja for hitting Ankit Bawne.

“It happened when Uthappa, after latching on to Ankit Bawne’s catch threw the ball which went on to hit the batsman who was still at the crease. He has been penalised under Level II of section 2.7,” said Jadeja who was also a witness to the incident. The law states ‘throwing the ball at a player, umpire or official in an inappropriate or dangerous manner.’

It was in the 52nd minute of play on Friday morning between Karnataka and Maharashtra when the incident happened. Bawne was dropped by Amit Varma at gully in the first over’s third ball. After that dropped chance, Bawne was going strong and the batsmen tried to cut the rising ball off S Arvind and Uthappa, who caught a good catch, threw the ball on the ground but it hit Bawne who was still at the crease.

“The player could have been banned a match but since he has a clean image, we have been lenient,” said Jadeja.
