Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif said that the war on match fixing should be stepped up, as it still remains a huge issue despite the ICC’s best efforts to curb it.
Latif had acted as a whistleblower in the past, and applauded the jail sentences handed down to disgraced Pakistan trio Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir.
Although he backs Pakistan to take revenge for their 2010 humbling in England, he believes it cannot be guaranteed that such an incident will not be repeated.
“Nothing can be guaranteed these days. You never know anything until it has surfaced. The recent case has only put a stamp on Pakistani players as match fixers — and I’ve seen a lot of it in the last 20 years,” The Daily Mirror quoted Latif, as saying.
“Anyone involved in match fixing must go behind bars. The people of Pakistan want to watch games without fixing,” he added.
Former Pakistan cricket captain Salman Butt was jailed for 30 months for his part in the conspiracy to bowl deliberate no-balls in last year's Test match against England.
Former world number two Test bowler Mohammad Asif, 28, was jailed for one year and bowler Mohammad Amir, 19, has been sentenced to six months.
Cricket agent Mazhar Majeed was jailed for two years and eight months.
