A career-best performance by pacer Harshal Patel put Haryana on top against Karnataka on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Monday. Patel picked up eight wickets for 40 runs as the hosts were bowled out for just 151 runs in their first innings.
At stumps, Haryana were 120 for no loss with Nitin Saini and Rahul Dewan unbeaten on 55 and 63 runs respectively.
Patel saw some movement early on and went on an all-out attack and picked up three wickets to reduce the hosts to 40 for three.
The bowler completed his first career fifer before lunch.
Patel struck in the second over of his second spell as he clean bowled Stuart Binny (22) after the right-hander misjudged an incoming delivery. Amit Verma, who had taken 39 balls to score his first run, became Patel’s fifth victim caught by Sachin Rana for just five runs.
Patel then picked up Muralidharen Gautam with the first ball of his third spell trapping him leg before for 26. KP Appanna and SL Akshay then took Karnataka to 148 runs before Patel dismissed both of them to wrap up the innings.
