It was a day when captains led their respective sides from the front. While Parthiv Patel scored 101, waging a lone battle for visitors Gujarat, Mumbai’s Zaheer Khan, captaining the side after a groin strain ruled Ajit Agarkar out, inspired his bowlers to bowl out the visitors for 244 at the DY Patil Stadium, himself taking two wickets.

At stumps on Day One, Mumbai were 24 for one with Kaustubh Pawar, centurion in the previous match against Madhya Pradesh in Indore, dismissed for 17.

In the morning, Zaheer won the toss and invited Gujarat to bat on a pitch that had a bit of grass. Making the most it, Zaheer drew first blood in his second over. Bowling around the wicket, the left-armer trapped Smit Patel leg before wicket for eight.

Zaheer’s new ball partner Dhaval Kulkarni, returning to the line-up in Agarkar’s absence, kept the pressure on with three maidens from seven overs. Bhargav Merai turned things around a bit for Gujarat and was particularly severe on 20-year-old Javed Khan. Merai scored three consecutive boundaries off Javed’s first over.

Zaheer, then, stepped in to give some advice to Javed and it reflected on the youngster’s bowling as he conceded only four runs in his next four overs. Opener Samit Gohel and Merai shared 64 for the second wicket before Kulkarni separated them, inducing the former to edge to Aditya Tare’s gloves.

In came captain Patel at 89 for two. The experienced left-hander played some delightful strokes to first see Gujarat past 100 in the 30th over. Mumbai picked up the third wicket at the stroke of lunch when Merai misjudged a single to mid-on and was run out.

The post-lunch session saw Patel unleash an array of strokes. Zaheer, bowling a lengthy spell of eight overs, got rid of Manprit Juneja for six, caught at fine leg. But Patel was in his own zone. He brought up his half-century with an upper-cut four off Javed.

As has been the norm with Mumbai this year, Patel got a respite on 64 when he was dropped by Hiken Shah at first slip off Kulkarni. The drop allowed the Gujarat captain to register his third century of the season.

Unfortunately for him, none of the other Gujarat batsmen supported him. Wickets fell at regular intervals before they were eventually bowled out even before the second new ball was due.
