Raj Thackeray’s might be happy to hear this. No longer will students coming to the city to appear for the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) examinations be harassed. The Union railway minister, Mamata Banerjee, clarified that henceforth the RRB examinations will be conducted across the country and students will not have to travel to other places to sit for the exams.
Banerjee, who was in the city on Saturday to flag off 10 different railway projects made this announcement. “After reviewing the examination policy we have decided that nobody will be required to travel,” Banerjee said.
It may be recalled that there have been several instances where students especially from north India were attacked by members of Shiv Sena and Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.
Clarifying the move, a senior railway official said, “There are 16 RRBs in the country. Every zonal railway (Central Railway, Western Railway, etc) are connected to their respective RRBs. For instance, Northern Railway may have certain vacancies and approach their RRB. Depending on the number of vacancies for various departments the respective RRB finalises an examination schedule, for which exam centers are identified in the respective state. Interested candidates are required to travel to those centres for the examinations. However, we have decided that irrespective of which railway has vacancies, examinations will be announced across the country and people will not be required to travel to centres.”
Further, Banerjee also clarified that people will be able to write the papers in the language of their state including Hindi, Marathi and Urdu. “We also plan to cancel the postal order fees charged to students,” she said.
