India may have seen the last of Rahul Dravid. After standing tall for 15 years, Dravid is set to bring the curtain down on his illustrious international career. The Wall will no longer be there for Indian cricket to fall back upon.

The world’s second highest Test scorer — second only to Sachin Tendulkar — has called a press conference in Bangalore on Friday where he is likely to announce his retirement from Test cricket. He has already retired from ODIs.

“There was and is only one Rahul Dravid. There can be no other. I will miss Rahul in the dressing room and out in the middle,” Tendulkar told DNA on Thursday evening, giving clear indication that his team-mate has decided to call it a day.

Dravid’s expected announcement will come after a rather dismal tour of Australia where India got humbled 0-4 in the Test series. The result led to a nationwide clamour for phasing out the seniors — Dravid, VVS Laxman and Tendulkar. Dravid was a poor shadow of his own self, managing only 194 runs at 24.25. As a mark of respect for his contribution to Indian cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India president N Srinivasan will be by his side when Dravid makes the announcement.

There is also a strong talk that Dravid has been forced by the BCCI to take the ultimate call but selection committee members on Thursday expressed ignorance. “I don’t know why he has called a press conference and why the board president is going there,” said a senior member of the committee.

Friends and former India and Karnataka teammates in Bangalore are surprised. “We don’t know what he is going to say at the press conference,” said a former India teammate of Dravid.

Word is doing the rounds that the BCCI might give him a farewell Test against New Zealand later this year, but a friend of Dravid, who did not want to be named, said he would quit all forms of cricket except IPL. Dravid will take a call on playing in the IPL after the forthcoming season 5. “He wants to spend more time with his family,” he said.
