ONGC lifted the men’s title of the fifth United Phosphorus Savio Cup all-India basketball tournament at the Don Bosco courts on Sunday. They beat Services 63-56in the final.
In a match that swung both ways, Services had a sizeable lead at all times but lost the momentum in the fourth and final quarters. Services were ahead 29-21 at half time.
The tide turned in the third quarter when the ONGC players showed their dissent and walked off the court in protest when a call went against them. They came back after five minutes but the momentum and adrenalin seemed to have shifted in favour of the ONGC. With the scores tied 46-46 with six minutes left in the fourth quarter.
When the final whistle blew the jubilant ONGC players rushed onto the court in celebration. Key player Riyaz said, “we wanted to win the match a lot and we knew we could even when we were trailing. We are happy that we won.” In the women’s final, Chhattisgarh beat Maharashtra 92-79.
