Olympics 2012: Gutta-Ponnappa will not replace disqualified teams

Indian women’s doubles pair Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, who failed to qualify for the quarterfinals despite a win in their last group match, will not replace one of the eight teams that were disqualified today for "not using one`s best efforts to win a match".

Four other pairs are now in the draw. From Russia, Australia, Canada and South Africa.

Two teams each from group A & C were disqualified and they have been replaced by the teams who hadn't made it initially.

India cannot appeal the decision as well.

Earlier, Indian badminton player Ashwini Ponnappa and her doubles partner Jwala Gutta appealed against the result between Japan and Chinese Taipei in their group match at the London Olympics 2012 as they suspect foul play which resulted in the ouster of the Indian pair.

Despite beating Singapore pair of Shinta Mulia Sari and Lei Yao 21-16, 21-15 in their group B match, Gutta and Ponnappa found themselves out of the competition because they conceded 2 points more than they should have in the group stage.

"I suspect foul play in the way Japan lost to Chinese Taipei. Me and Jwala would like to appeal against the result," an Indian news channel quoted Ponnappa as saying.
