Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his boys deserve every ounce of credit for the historic annihilation of the Aussies.

So, are we entering another golden age of Indian cricket under Dhoni? Not really! This win will only prove to be a temporary blip and not an indication of things to come. With the unprecedented victory, Dhoni has ensured that he would be the captain of the team in all formats at least till the end of World Cup 2015. But the paradox is that if Dhoni remains captain, India will never be able to win another World Cup.

Men with extraordinary horoscopes come together to form World Cup-winning squads. ‘Kapil’s Devils’ in 1983 and Dhoni’s Men in Blue in 2011 and also 2007 had outstanding horoscopes. But the current crop of Indian players does not have the great horoscopes of these men of yore. Not just the shorter formats, but even in the longer ones this current batch cannot supersede their seniors. Regaining No 1 position in Test rankings can only remain a distant dream.

Excepting Virat Kohli and R Ashwin, none of the other cricketers have horoscopes to match their predecessors. Murali Vijay can never put a match-winning effort in a World Cup final like Gautam Gambhir. Shikhar Dhawan, however good, cannot be another Sehwag.

Nor can Cheteshwar Pujara replicate the consistency of Rahul Dravid overseas. Ajinkya Rahane can never perform the  Houdini like VVS Laxman; Ravindra Jadeja can never win a World Cup as a true all-rounder like Yuvraj Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar is just one unfortunate injury away from a long layoff.

This group of players are destined to be those ‘good-but-not-great’ types. We will have ‘great’ cricketers arriving in the Indian scene only after Dhoni steps down from captaincy. If some youngster becomes the captain of the Twenty 20 format, then the probabilities of India winning the World T20 in 2014 goes up dramatically.

Probably we won convincingly against Australia because these cricketers were destined to become regulars for some time till we lose sterner battles overseas and also bigger championships.

Probably, they may win a few battles but not the war. Probably, Dhoni’s captaincy was not destined to end on a high note.
