Sofia: Bulgaria captain Dimitar Berbatov has set his sights on winning the Champions League after breaking his country's goal-scoring record.

The 28-year-old Manchester United striker became Bulgaria's leading scorer after netting twice in a 4-1 friendly win in Malta on Wednesday.

Berbatov scored his 47th and 48th goals on his 74th international appearance to break former midfield maestro Hristo Bonev's record. "I'm happy with the record because it was one of my goals," he told reporters at Sofia airport on Thursday. "I've achieved a lot and now (winning) the Champions League remains my only unrealised dream.

"I took part in two finals and failed to win it so now I hope to make it third time lucky," said the striker, part of Bayer Leverkusen's team that lost 2-1 to Real Madrid in the 2002 final and also part of the United side beaten 2-0 by Barcelona in May.

Bonev, 62, said: "I knew long ago Berbatov would break my record but I'm proud a player with such class did it."He is a top player ... and I think it's going to be many years before there's another striker like him in the national team."
