Cricketers who are keenly awaiting the Mumbai Cricket Association’s Twenty20 Championship will be disappointed to know that the tournament will not kick off this season. The reason being packed schedule and lack of time.

The championship is an annual affair held in the beginning of a year for the A and B division teams where the cream of Mumbai cricket show their shorter version skills to get noticed.
However, as Mumbai has been hosting a few high-profile tournaments, it has been difficult to accommodate this T20 tournament. The West Zone Vijay Hazare Trophy, the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 followed by the cash-rich Indian Premier League have come in the way of this local competition.

The MCA is finding it difficult to find a space for the tournament.
Usually, the Mumbai team for the Mushtaq Ali Trophy was considered on the basis of this tournament. “We should have hosted the tournament before, however that has not happened. It was difficult for the players to make it due to a packed schedule, but we could have organised it for B division teams. Also, the packed calendar and a few BCCI tournaments that were allotted to Mumbai did not give us the space,” said an official from the MCA.

“The season is coming to an end. However, if we get a slight opportunity to organise it, we won’t hesitate. But as of now, it seems unlikely.”

The MCA T20 championships began in 2009-10. Last season, Victory Cricket Club had got the better of Fort Vijay Cricket Club by 39 runs at the Wankhede stadium. Interestingly, it was the first competitive match played at the historical venue after its makeover.
