The Indian Formula One driver has hired physio and trainer Balbir Singh, famous for his association with the seven-time world champion.
Indian Formula One driver Narain Karthikeyan has hired physio and trainer Balbir Singh, famous for his association with seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.
Singh will help Karthikeyan get through the physical and mental rigours of the season which kicked off at Albert Park last week.
Singh, a Punjab-born German stepped into F1 after Schumacher offered him the role of his personal physio ahead of his Ferrari debut in 1996.
Singh has been an avid proponent of a variety of holistic therapies - which although unusual, have been gaining ground in recent years cementing the fact that in a rigorous sport like F1, looking beyond merely physical fitness is essential.
“The pressure on the drivers is enormous - it is a big business so there can be no room for complacency. It is not just about being physically fit either, since there is a lot of mental strain as well," said Singh.
Karthikeyan, who failed to qualify for the Australian Grand Prix, recalled his meeting with Singh during the Indian Grand Prix in October saying the physio got the best out him.
“It was certainly different - Balbir got the best out of me not only in terms of fitness, but I was in a much better place mentally as well. My concentration levels were better, despite the fact that it was the toughest weekend of the season - both outside and inside the car," said Karthikeyan.
“There was pressure of performing on home ground, living up to the fans’ expectations and the run-up to the weekend had been extremely hectic with a slew of media and sponsor commitments. But Balbir’s unique techniques helped me keep focus amidst all of that and it sure played its part out on the track - when it counted,” he added.
Besides working with Schumacher for a decade, Singh was also part of the Force India outfit.
