Despite enjoying his best weeks of this season in the US PGA tour, Arjun Atwal, the only Indian to have won a US PGA event, seems to be getting hungrier for success and he pointed out that his best is yet to come.

“Well, frankly speaking, I am still not playing the best golf of my life. I think my best is yet to come. When it will come? I hope it comes soon,” Atwal told DNA from his Florida residence.

Last Sunday, Atwal came very close to winning his second title on the PGA Tour. Having started the final round at the HP Byron Nelson Championship, a four-over-74 score on Sunday forced him to finish tied eighth.

“Well, I was really disappointed as I really had a good chance of winning the tournament. May be a birdie at the 11th instead of a bogey and who knows I could have won the title,” said Atwal. “The conditions were really difficult with the winds blowing 20-23 miles per hour and it was really tough. Everyone in the leader board were in with a chance to win the event. Unluckily, I missed out,” he added.

But for Atwal, the last two weeks have been really good. At the Crown Plaza Invitational in Texas, Atwal finished tied 16th, his third best finish of the season. “I would take it positively as it has been two good weeks for me. I am playing lot better and getting better with every passing week,” said Atwal, whose last top-20 finish this season was way back in January at Hyundai Tournament of Champions, where he finished tied 12th.

The 38-year old pointed out that he hasn’t set any long term goal for the season and just wants to win every tournament he plays. “My main goal is to win the tournaments I play. I take every week as it comes and go out there and give my best,” said Atwal. The Asansol-born golfer, who won the Wyndham Championship last year, which also, gave him an exemption in the tour for two seasons is much relaxed golfer. “The pressure is certainly off as I don’t have to think about my card anymore and concentrate on my game. Slowly and steadily, it’s also reflecting on my game,” he said. “But then there is the responsibility of scheduling the events I play. Since its very important to schedule your tournaments to get the best out of yourself,” Atwal pointed out.

The year also saw Atwal making his debut at the Masters. Though he failed to make the cut, Atwal had many positives to take from the event. “Playing at the Masters for the first time is a dream for every golfer, but I really didn’t like it this time, since I hate playing bad at any major,” said Atwal.

“But the only positive is that after the second round, I know the course better and next time when I play there, I will definitely play much better,” concluded Atwal, who is now headed to Ohio to play in the Memorial tournament, one of the prestigious events on the tour, which has been won four times by Tiger Woods.
