Ahmedabad: Gujarat off-spinner Mohnish Parmar, under a cloud of suspicion for his bowling action, has been cleared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), making him available for Gujarat's second Ranji tie against Tamil Nadu starting next week. Unfortunately for the state, the other Gujarat bowler under the scanner for the same reason, Amit Singh, has not been cleared to bowl.
On Tuesday evening, the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) received confirmation with regard to Parmar's status from a BCCI committee comprising S Venkatraghavan, Javagal Srinath and AV Jayprakash. "We have got a positive response from the committee regarding Mohnish. However, Amit has not been cleared," GCA secretary Rajesh Patel said.
Though Parmar may have improved on his action after rehabilitation, he continues to be in the suspect zone as on-field umpires may call a 'throw' delivery is they observe one.
And the GCA, once bitten, is unwilling to take any chances, sending Parmar to the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bangalore.
The young spinner will be joined by GCA consultant Aunshuman Gaekwad, who has worked on his new action. Parmar, earlier considered to be one of the M Muralidharan clan because of his action, now has a straight run-up. "We have worked hard on Mohnish's action for the past three weeks. His daily practice stretched over six hours," chief coach Vijay Patel said.
Parmar's action now differs from that in the video footage viewed by the BCCI committee. "I hope his new action will be cleared by the NCA. Moreover, Jayprakash and Srinath are in Bangalore. So, if required, they will do the needful," Patel said.
