Miniskirts are out and desi costumes are in for the cheerleaders of the Sahara Pune Warriors in IPL 4. The new IPL team will break convention as they go ethnic by introducing the concept of ‘Bhartiya Nrityanganas’ for their team of cheerleaders.

The ‘Bhartiya Nrityanganas or ‘Cheer Queens’, as they have been christened, will perform seven different classical dance forms that include Bharata Natyam, Maharashtra’s Lavni, Manipuri dance, Kuchipudi, Haryanvi, Bengali and Mohiniyattam. The usual short skirts and pom-poms will be replaced by traditional costumes and intricate hand gestures.

The idea is the brainchild of Sahara group honcho,  Subrata Roy. Sahara spokesperson Abhijit Sarkar told DNA, “We want to showcase India’s rich  culture on an international platform like the IPL.” Sarkar pointed out that the new concept will not diminish the glamour that the IPL is known for as Sahara has approached designer Neeta Lulla to design the individual costumes, while danseuse Tanushree Shankar and Bollywood’s Ganesh Hegde will choreograph the routines.

Tanushree Shankar said, “We will keep the routines as traditional as possible. Classical dance will be the basis.” Pune-based cricket lover Nandan Kayamkhane, 54, believes this new avatar of cheer leaders will appeal to the older generation by catering to traditional Indian sensibilities. “This is better than copying  western practices,” he said.
