The Madras High Court today refused to postpone the matches of the third edition of Indian Premier League in view of secondary and higher secondary examinations. and asked the Centre to take a decision on the matter.

A representation was made in the court for the postponement of the IPL, starting from Friday in Mumbai.

Disposing of the petition filed by film producer Hennry, a Division Bench, comprising chief justice HL Gokhale and justice V Dhanapalan said, "We expect the Union sports ministry and Union human resources development ministry to take a decision at the earliest."

The petitioner, in the main prayer had sought a direction to the Centre to frame a set of guidelines and code of conduct and put in place a mechanism to supervise, regulate, monitor and if necessary, control cricket in the country.

The High Court on February 17, while disposing an earlier petition, had directed the petitioner to approach the Centre for relief before approaching the court.

The petitioner had again moved the court, stating there was no response to the representation sent to IPL, BCCI or the Centre.

Noting objections by Tamil Nadu advocate general PS Raman on the maintainability of the petition, the judges said, "We are of the view that when a representation has been made to the union government the government must take a decision thereof."
