Shooter wants Dada to cheer in London
Olympics-bound Bengal shooter Joydeep Karmakar hopes Sourav Ganguly comes to London to cheer him and his fellow shooters during the mega-event. Karmakar, who made it to the Olympics after clearing the National Rifles Association of India selection procedure, had met Ganguly before leaving for the ISSF World Cup in London. Ganguly had told him that he might drop in to cheer for him in the London Olympics. “It has been a very short conversation. I’ll be happy if Dada comes to see his “younger brother” battle it out in London... Hope if someone of us wins, he does his shirt-swirl act again,” Karmakar said before leaving for London for the World Cup. Karmakar, along with ace shooter Gagan Narang, will compete in the 50m rifle-prone event at the London Olympics.

Games motto is ‘Inspire a generation’
London Olympic organisers unveiled the Games’ motto ‘Inspire a generation’ on Wednesday. The Games chairman Sebastian Coe said the motto aimed at London’s promises that its Games would leave a genuine, lasting legacy. “It’s the heartbeat, the very DNA of this organisation and a rallying cry for the athletes to come to the UK to perform at their very best and inspire the world,” he said.

Beckham retained in 80-man squad
David Beckham remains in contention for Britain’s Olympic football team after surviving the latest cut in the squad. Manager Stuart Pearce has slashed his long list of 191 players down to 80 since January as he prepares Britain’s first Olympic football team since 1960. The 18-man squad is expected to be named by June.

No meat for Chinese
Chinese athletes are swearing off meat ahead of the London Olympics out of fear that domestic pork, beef and lamb could contain substances banned under anti-doping rules, a report said on Wednesday. They are instead relying on protein powder and fish to meet the high protein needs of top-class athletes. At least 196 competitors under China’s National Aquatics Centre have been off meat for the past 40 days.

Tickets boost for British athletes
British athletes will not have to worry about their nearest and dearest missing their moments of glory at the London Olympics. The governing body UK Athletics said it would buy tickets to ensure British competitors’ friends and families can watch every twist and turn.

IOC offers social media space
The International Olympic Committee has launched a section on its official website for fans to “view in real time what the athletes competing at the London Games are saying on social media sites.” Hub users can sign up at www.olympic.org/hub to search a directory of athletes by country or sport.
