LONDON: Jettisoned by Midland, Narain Karthikeyan's moribund Formula 1 career received a new lease of life after Williams on Friday confirmed the Indian as their ''fourth driver''.

''It has taken some while to resolve what I'd be doing in 2006. But having tested for Williams late last year, joining the team was the best option for me and I am delighted that we can finally confirm this today,'' an elated Karthikeyan said.

''I am looking forward to testing the FW28 and making a  contribution to Williams’ competitiveness this season,'' he added.

Karthikeyan had an average rookie year with Jordan, rechristened Midland, and the team discarded this year.

Though his name was doing the rounds as a Williams test driver, Alex Wurz's arrival from McLaren seemed to have slammed the door on him.

The Indian had tested for Williams at Jerez in December and he impressed the team with his pace but Williams signed Wurz, which fuelled speculation even though the team kept saying they had not ruled out the Chennai driver.

''Narain's brief period in the car in December, during which he provided valuable feedback, made a very distinct impression on our engineers,'' team boss Frank Williams said before launching the new Williams FW28 car on Friday.

''Having a year's Grand Prix racing and testing to his credit is also advantageous for us so I am pleased we can now formally confirm his appointment,'' he said.

Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg have been named Williams driver for this season.
