Day two was no better for Indian contingent at the World Boxing Championships in Milan, Italy. After Suranjoy Singh missing out by a point, Asian bronze medallist Jitender Kumar was disqualified during his bantamweight (54kg) opening round on Wednesday.

Facing his old nemesis and sixth seed Yunusov Anvar of Tajikistan, Jitender was disqualified after being given the mandatory three warnings for three different offences.

Anvar was Jitender’s nemesis even in the flyweight (51kg) division and had beaten him in the quarterfinals of the inaugural President’s Cup last year in June. Anvar, also a Beijing Olympics quarterfinalist and jumped a division to bantamweight this year almost around the same time the Indian made the change.

The 22-year-old, who created a lot of buzz by making the quarterfinals of Beijing Olympics last year, was first warned when he clinched his opponent in the opening minute of the eventful bout.

But Jitender, who looked like ignoring the first warning, got a second one in the next round. The second warning came when he was penalised for “pushing and downing” Anvar.

Already trailing at 7-17 in the third and final round, Jitender looked to have lost his composure. He committed his third and final foul that led to his disqualification, was given in the deciding round for a right upper cut. “It’s heartbreaking. It’s difficult to keep your composure once you have been warned. I am very disappointed,” Jitender said.

With Jitender’s, three Indians have exited the blue riband event in the very first round. Late on Tuesday night, another Indian boxer Manoj Kumar was beaten by Brazil’s Carvaho Myke of Brazil in the 64 kg. The bout between Kumar and Myke was also close with the Brazilian winning by a margin of just one point 5-4.
