A solitary strike by Jinay Jain was good enough for Utpal Sanghvi High School, Juhu, to beat St Lawrence High School, Kandivli, in the MSSA under-16 division two play-off encounter at Azad Maidan on Wednesday. Utpal Sanghvi thus advance to the semifinal stage.

Knowing that the losing side will be knocked out of the tournament, both schools showed caution in the opening stages of the match. Goalless at half time, the game looked destined for a tie-break as the players were intent on not giving an inch’s space to their opponents.

However, the game took a dramatic turn just minutes after the restart as St Lawrence conceded a free kick very close to the penalty box. Tabish Ansari cleverly took the kick quickly, before the rival defence could settle and Jain slotted home from close range.

St Lawrence launched a series of desperate attacks to restore parity but some good goalkeeping by Rushank Mansad and excellent marking by Nishit Gandhi and Shantanu Bhavishkar took Utpal through without conceding.
