New Delhi: The Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) can expect strong disciplinary action from the world body after a number of positive dope tests over the past few months.
The International Weightlifting Federation will, however, decide on the quantum
of punishment only after going into the six individual cases of doping which brought embarrassment to the Indian federation.
The world body's legal counsel, Monika Ungar, said in a statement on Friday: "India has repeatedly produced multiple cases of doping in recent years, but the cases are still open. The executive board shall take a very strong action against the Indian federation once all the cases are closed. Such actions will be made public upon the closure of the last case."
Ungar said the cases of the six weightlifters, who tested positive in out-of-competition World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) tests in September, were pending under "results management".
"There won't be any final decision until all the cases are closed," she further stated.
The Indian Olympic Association is hoping for a reprieve contending that a new elected body will ensure stricter vigil, after the entire executive committee of the IWF resigned taking 'moral responsibility' for the doping violations.
If banned, it could be the third such instance for the Indian body, which suffered similar punishment in 2004 and 2006 for three or more doping violations in a calendar year.
