Edoardo Mortara followed in the footsteps of motor racing greats Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna by winning the Macau Formula Three Grand Prix on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Italian, who finished second from pole last year, moved up from third on the grid to win the 56th version of the race ahead of fellow Signature driver Jean-Karl Vernay of France.

Mortara's compatriot Gabriele Tarquini earlier won the world touring car championship by finishing fifth in the final race of the season on the streets of the former Portuguese colony.

The 44-year-old survived a high speed collision with defending champion and fellow Seat driver Yvan Muller in qualifying but recovered to wrest the world title from the Frenchman, who finished third in the final round.
