Abhishek Nayar was labelled a shorter version player for his attacking style of batting. On Wednesday, he proved that he can stand up and be counted in the longer version too.

The southpaw, resuming at his overnight score of 102, struck a unblemished 259 in his more than seven hours’ stay on a flat track that helped West Zone put up a mammoth 769 in the first innings against North Zone on the second day of the four-day Duleep Trophy semifinal tie at Madhavrao Scindia Stadium in Rajkot on Wednesday. In reply, North Zone were tottering at 36-3.

The 26-year-old struck his career’s first double hundred and was involved in three century partnerships with Ravindra Jadeja (61), Ramesh Powar (109) and Dhawal Kulkarni (50) and a half century stand with Rohit Sharma (63). Nayar’s knock came in 389 balls with 38 boundaries and five sixes. “Though the track was flat, it required a hell lot of patience and temperament to score a double hundred,” a delighted and tired Nayar told DNA from Rajkot.

Nayar got into the rhythm, after  starting the innings in a tentative manner. “Once I reached 100, I aimed for 150 then I went further and further. I am glad with the way I scored. It is satisfying at the end of the day when you score a double hundred,” he added.
The middle-order batsman did not have the best of the starts to the season as he was out of the team due to a wrist injury. His return too wasn’t good either till his crucial innings of 156 against Delhi that gave Mumbai the ticket to the Ranji Trophy finals. Again in final, he played an important role.

Summarised scores: At Rajkot: West Zone 769 (A Nayar 259, C Pujara 77, R Sharma 63, R Powar 109, V Mishra 4-154) vs North Zone 36-3 (M Patel 2-11); At Indore: Central Zone 333 (M Kaif 112, P Chawla 90*, R Vinay Kumar 5-102) vs South Zone 254-8 (C Gautam 52, R Ashwin 58, P Kumar 5-48)
