On Sunday, when the Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council (GC) met, Sunil Gavaskar & Co suggested some revolutionary reforms for the tournament. It could be the last time they met to decide about the IPL.

For, the current GC is going to be dissolved, at the annual general meeting (AGM) of the BCCI to be held on September 29.

The BCCI is introducing a constitutional amendment to dissolve the current panel, which was headed by suspended IPL chairman Lalit Modi till recently. The amendment, notices of which have gone to the state associations, is planning to reconstitute the council, the term for which will be one year; the current term is five years. The current GC came into being in 2008. “The existing GC shall stand dissolved upon the approval of this amendment by the general body at the AGM of the board,” the AGM notice reads.

One of the most important changes planned is to have two cricketers in the GC instead of three. This means, one of the three former captains in the GC — Ravi Shastri, MAK Pataudi and Gavaskar — will lose his job. All three may also be replaced by two new members.

All three are paid members, earning Rs1 crore per year for being on the GC. The BCCI even bears the tax implications of their remuneration. While it is difficult to say who out of the three will be out, it may not be difficult to guess if the BCCI wishes to drop just one of them. Gavaskar is not known to be too close to the current dispensation of the BCCI.

If approved, the new GC will have a chairman and five appointed members apart from two former cricketers. The four BCCI officer-bearers — president, secretary, joint secretary and treasurer — will be the ex-officio members.

At present, there are 13 members in the GC. “It could be all three, just one or two of the three. We’ve not decided. It is difficult to predict,” said a top BCCI official.
