Takes 3 wickets and then smashes 62 to hand Warriors a 5-wicket thrashing

AHMEDABAD: A superb all-round display by Naved ul-Hasan kept Lahore Badshahs in the contention for the semifinal spot when they handed Dhaka Warriors a five-wicket defeat in the Indian Cricket League 20s Indian Championship here at Sardar Patel Stadium.

Hasan first scalped three wickets and then smashed 62 off 32 balls as the Inzamam ul-Haq led outfit reached the target with 23 balls to spare.

Chasing Dhaka Warriors’ 145, Badshahs started disastrously when Imran Farhat perished for one. But then Imran Nazir and Rana added 53 runs in six overs. Playing his natural game Nazir hit five boundaries during his 15-ball knock.

All eye were on Mohammad Yousuf when he took guard after Nazir’s departure. Yousuf’s innings was full of drama. The much-hyped debut started in grand style when the Pakistani hit Tapash Baisya for three consecutive boundaries on either side of wickets to the crowds delight. But then he disappointed the spectators by edging the fourth ball to wicketkeeper Dhiman Ghosh while attempting a cut shot.

Unfazed by the fall of Yousuf’s wicket, Rana took charge. He hit left-arm spinner Mohammad Rafique for three successive sixes after giving similar treatment to Moshraff Hussain in the previous over.

Inzamam, however, brought his experience into play and anchored Badshahs innings to safety. Captain scored unbeaten 27 runs which had three delightful boundaries.

Earlier, Warriors began their essay cautiously, unlike their previous outing at the same venue against Delhi Giants, with Shariar Nafees (35) and Nazimuddin (20) after being sent in by Inzamam ul-Haq. The duo negated the Badshahs well initially by touching the 50-run mark in the eighth over.

The shortest format of the game demands big shots which weren’t coming easily as the Badshahs’ seamers - Mohammad Sami, Azhar Mahmood and Shahid Nazir - bowled with discipline. This made Nazim desperate for runs. He then attempted one against offie Saqlain Mustaq, just to see his wickets in complete disarray.

Batting one-down Aftab Ahmed played an important cameo. The southpaw was responsible for damaging Shahid Nazir’s bowling figures. The seamer whose bowling figures read 3-0-8-0 before bowling his final, was hit all over the ground.

Aftab smashed two boundaries and one flick over the long-leg ropes provided the necessary thrust to the Dhaka innings. But fell when Naved’s slower delivery separated bails from the wickets.

Nafees on the other end continued to battle with prism of shots ranging from agriculture to copy book style. But then he too succumbed to pressure built at the other end. Coach Moin Khan’s efforts paid off when a good bowling was complimented by some exceptional fielding, displaying a never die spirit. Nafees trying to pull Saqlain, was
picked up by diving Imran Farhat in the deep.

Centurion Alok Kapali showed some promise by dispatching Saqlain over
long-off. But then foxed by Saqlain’s loop, Kapali returned after making 16. Cashing on the pressure belt build by his mates, Naved’s two blows - Mahbubul Karim (1) and Mohammad Rafique (2) - arrested the Warriors progress. Deceiving batsmen with mixture of deliveries Naved showed his proficiency.

Captain Habibul Bashar (17) tried to stand between Badshahs and a good score but had to surrender as he ran out of overs.
