Controversies and Harbhajan Singh seem to travel together and the off-spinner was today challaned by the Chandigarh Traffic Police for plying his recently-imported Hummer vehicle without a registration number.

City's senior superintendent of police (traffic), HS Doon said Harbhajan's vehicle was found moving without number plate yesterday. "We have issued a challan of Rs 3,000 for the violation," he added.

Harbhajan, who is here to participate in the BCCI Sahara Corporate Cup, yesterday boarded an Innova vehicle on way to his hotel here from the airport. But along the way, he changed over and sat in his recently purchased Hummer, which was being
driven by another person.

The vehicle without any registration number had escaped any challan by the Punjab police when it had been driven about 150 kms from his Jalandhar home to Chandigarh by a friend of the cricketer.

As per the Motor Vehicles Act, no vehicle can be brought on the road without a registration number.

"Be it an international cricketer or a common man, the law is same for everyone. If Harbhajan or anybody else is moving without a registration number, action will be taken as per law," Doon said.

The temporary number issued at the time of purchase is valid for 30 days, traffic police officials said adding even the temporary registration number has to be displayed properly on the number plates in the front and the rear.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time that Harbhajan has landed in controversy in and around Chandigarh.

In the first edition of the IPL, he found himself involved in a slapgate incident with pacer S Sreesanth at the PCA Stadium at Mohali in Punjab near here.

Bhajji, who is a Sikh, was also caught on the wrong foot when he featured in an advertisement of a well-known liquor brand.

His act in a dance show with a leading TV actress also ruffled feathers of some members of the local Hindu community, representatives of which had filed a defamation case against him. Harabhjan later tendered an apology.
