A top footballer for Germany has come into the limelight after his wife and two other women he had brought back to their apartment ended up in what has been described as a "wild west catfight".

Gerald Asamoah, 32, returned to his home in the port city after his 300th Bundesliga game for his club St Pauli, and went to a champagne birthday party in the Reeperbahn red light district for midfielder Max Kruse.

Asamoah, who has 43 caps for his country, said he met two women he knew called Florence and Priscilla in a club, and after drinking more champagne and eating hamburgers, he invited them back to his flat.

But he didn't know was that his wife Linda, 30, was asleep in the apartment, as she usually lives with their three children 350 miles west in the former Ruhr industrial area of Germany.

"What happened next can best be described as a wild west catfight," the Daily Mail quoted one police officer as saying.

As Asamoah sat with his female friends at the kitchen table, the door to the room swung open to reveal his furious wife, and the police report said after an exchange of words it soon escalated into violence.

"Linda had a thick bundle of her hair torn out of her head and saw it thrown on to a sofa," the report revealed.

According to testimony from Priscilla and Florence, she then pulled a knife from a kitchen block and went after the visitors but only succeeded in injuring herself severely in the hand.

Media reports spoke of "blood, screaming and one woman running from the apartment" as Asamoah was left to call for an ambulance and neighbours summoned the police.

Linda was treated at a local hospital and has taken out a police complaint against the woman who pulled her hair out.

Bild newspaper in Germany reported that Asamoah made a swift exit from the scene by telling police he had to go to training.

"Everything was completely harmless. There was nothing sexual involved. My wife knows the two women but, however, was not best pleased that I was with them," Asamoah told Bild.

"Therefore this has led to stress between us in the past. Linda only hurt herself because she reached for the knife block in her rage and threw it on the floor," he added.
