Indian women’s basketball captain Geethu Anna Jose is coming to terms with the disappointment of missing the Australian second division league. The 24-year-old had received an invitation from Australia’s Ringwood Hawks, but the Indian Olympic Association refused to grant her permission because it wanted her to attend the Asian Games camp instead.
Geethu, who believes that the Australian stint would’ve sharpened her game better than the camp, said she was disappointed but had come to terms with the IOA’s decision. “I could’ve played in Australia and returned to India in time for the Asian Games. I’m disappointed, but I’m taking it with the spirit of a sportsperson,” the 24-year-old told DNA.
Geethu was a standout performer at the FIBA Asia Championship at Chennai in September, top-scoring in nearly every match.
Geethu got 132 points from six games to emerge the highest scorer of the tournament. At the time she credited much of her improvement to her stint with the Hawks. “The Australian league helped me a lot, since all the girls there are big, and I wasn’t overawed of the Chinese or Koreans,” she said.
