Gaganjeet Bhullar isn’t afraid of aiming big. Only then, he believes, one can achieve success. High on confidence after an improbable win at the season-opener Asian Tour International in Bangkok on Sunday, Bhullar has his new target locked.

Atop of the Asian Order of Merit for 2010 after bagging $47,550 for his triumph, Bhullar now wants to win the prestigious Order of Merit crown. “I’ll try to win the Order of Merit this year. This win has put me in a good frame of mind but I’ll need to win the big events which will be the goal for the rest of the year,” Bhullar said on his return to New Delhi on Monday.

India has produced three Order of Merit champions with the pride of place going to Jeev Milkha Singh, who has won the accolade twice, Arjun Atwal and Jyoti Randhawa.

The win has given Bhullar two-year exemption on the Asian tour. Satisfied with his performance on Sunday, he admitted the role luck played in his win on Sunday. Overnight leader Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand faltered with a final round 73, giving Bhullar an opening. And the Kapurthala-pro didn’t disappoint. Bhullar underscored his immense talent at the Suwan Golf and Country Club to produce a scintillating course record on the last day. His four-day total of 11-under 277 was a stroke better than runner-up Hwang Inn-choon of Korea.

“I had nothing to lose. I was hitting the ball well and just hoped for a good score in the final round. But even to my surprise, I carded one of my best rounds that gave me a win that I will cherish forever,” the 21-year-old told DNA.

“I feel I have become stronger mentally too. There were many tournaments last season that I came close to winning but couldn’t finish it off. But that’s changing now,” Bhullar assessed.

Bhullar will tee off at the DLF Golf and Country Club in this week’s 1.5 million euros Avantha Masters and with this win, he will surely start as one of the favourites. “It is one of my favourite courses. I am more confident to play here now. I just hope I carry on the good form,” he said.
