Angered over not being named the captain of his domestic squad, star Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi has threatened the Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA) that he will quit the team.

“I think the KCCA senior officials need to rethink their attitude towards senior players and how they treat them,” said Afridi, who is currently playing in the National Twenty20 Cup being held here.

The KCCA had ignored Afridi and appointed fast bowler Mohammed Sami as the skipper of the Karachi team for the tournament.

“I think the KCCA officials should have had the courtesy to at least tell me why they didn’t want me as captain. I am always prepared to play even as an ordinary player but there is a way you treat senior players and the KCCA is not doing that,” The Daily Times quote Afridi, as saying.

“I have always taken a lot of pride in representing Karachi in domestic cricket but if the KCCA continue to treat senior players badly then even I might be forced to play for some other region in coming events,” the flamboyant all rounder added.

Meanwhile, KCCA General Secretary Sirajul Islam Bukhari has backed the decision to name Sami as the skipper of the squad, saying he has already led the team to win the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

“The fact is that last season when we wanted him to lead the side he was not available and this year we also had to take into consideration the fact that Sami had led Karachi to the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy title and deserved to continue as captain,” Bukhari said.

This is not the first time that an international cricketer has been ill-treated by a domestic cricket association in Pakistan.

Earlier, all rounder Abdul Razzaq had opted to play for Sialkot Stallions after being overlooked for the captaincy by the Lahore City Cricket Association (LCCA).
