An elated England captain Frank Lampard said that while the victory against World Cup champion Spain at the Wembley Stadium on Saturday was welcome, the national squad still had a long way to go before being considered champions in their own right.

The Chelsea midfielder's 49th-minute header was enough to put the reigning world and European champions to the sword at Wembley.

However, the Three Lions were outclassed for large parts of the match, with Spain bossing possession and creating more openings.

The Sun quoted Lampard, as saying: "It was an amazing feeling to walk out as captain against the world champions on Remembrance weekend. It became a very big game for me personally and the team and I think we showed something today.”

"They obviously dominated possession at times in the game and we've got strides to go forward still. But the desire and the defending and the commitment of the players was brilliant today,” he added.

Lampard told his international colleagues not to get carried away with their friendly victory.

He said: "For everyone, it is a lift, but we have to be realistic. We know they dominated the game for long periods. We won't be shouting from rooftops. We understand football. We are not quite where we want to be just yet but to beat a side like Spain is something we can definitely build upon." (ANI)
