Mumbai Cricket Association was shaken on Monday as four former players tendered resignations. Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) members Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Nilesh Kulkarni and Karsan Ghavri resigned from the committee while Milind Rege stepped down as a selector.

The MCA establishment was stunned by the development. An MCA official tried to play down the issue stating that the resignations were not due to problems with the association. “An incident happened in the last CIC meeting and the cricketers are really hurt. Hence they decided to give up their posts,” said a senior official.

Sandhu said he was unhappy with the treatment  meted out to former cricketers. “CIC is there to improve cricket in Mumbai. The suggestion given by Test cricketers are not acceptable or appreciated by the committee. Nor are  efforts  made to implement the suggestions. In such a scenario, I find it difficult to continue,” he said.

Nilesh Kulkarni echoed Sandhu’s views. “I have resigned on moral grounds. My objective was to do my best for Mumbai cricket with honesty but discovered a different kind of atmosphere here,” said Kulkarni.

It is learnt Rege, who was the chairman of the selection committee last year, was not happy with the changes made in the committee. Despite being the senior most, the post of the chairman was given to Abey Kuruvilla, who is junior to him. Even after Sandip Patil’s appointment as Mumbai’s chief selector on Friday, Rege was not given the charge in absence of Patil.

“Despite giving so many years to Mumbai cricket, it is really humiliating with the treatment given to the cricketers,” he said.
MCA president Ravi Sawant said that the matter would be looked into. “We have got the resignation of Rege and Sandhu which will be forwaded to the managing committee. They haven’t really specified the reasons,” said Sawant.
