Till yesterday, there were reports that Giancarlo Fisichella was keen on driving a Ferrari for the next five races in 2009. However, the Italian created history by putting Force India on pole for Sunday’s Belgian GP. (This means Fisichella will start in first position on the track in Sunday’s race, giving him a great chance to win points.) The 36-year-old’s performance created a sensation not only because it was the team’s first pole, but also because the team is yet to score a single point in its one and a half years of existence. The Vijay Mallya-owned team may even register its first podium finish. “I am so happy. We have taken a fantastic step forward, especially from the last race. Considering our budget, I didn’t expect that,” an ecstatic Fisichella said after the qualifying session.

The Force India driver created a sensation at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit on Saturday after he outqualified the rest of the field. A factor in Fisichella’s favour is that the last two races have been won by different teams using the same Mercedes Benz engines, the same unit that Force India uses.
