Former Argentina defender Fernando Caceres has left hospital two months after miraculously escaping death when he was shot in the head, doctors said.

The 40-year-old was attacked in his car by a youth one night early in November, leaving him in a coma and with the loss of an eye. The bullet is still lodged in his head.

Doctors at the specialist centre on the outskirts of Buenos Aires where he is recovering said it was a miracle Caceres, who played at the 1994 World Cup in the United States, had not died.

"He is speaking and eating normally and his recuperation will consist in overcoming the partial paralysis of the left side of his body," hospital director Ramon Castillo was quoted as telling local media on Tuesday night.

"He could recover his mobility and in time walk again," Castillo added.

Caceres, who helped Argentina win the Copa America in 1993, played for Argentinos Juniors, River Plate, Real Zaragoza, Boca Juniors, Valencia, Celta Vigo and Independiente.
