Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Anil Kumble believes every international match is under a perceived threat from match-fixing.
Speaking at a function ahead of his side’s departure to South Africa for the Champions League Twenty20, the former India skipper said, “Every tournament, every international match that happens is under a perceived threat. If you are going to attach that to one tournament (Champions League), you are free to do that.”
He added, “I don’t think we need to be worried about these things but we can’t close our eyes. ACSU (ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit) is there.”
The spot-fixing scandal has left Kumble disappointed, but at the same time, he wants the investigation to the completed.
“It is disappointing. The investigation is on, and only when the final judgment is made, can we can discuss about it,” Kumble said. “We see these kinds of scams and cheating in all spheres of life. But when it happens in sport, it is disappointing.’’
Kumble feels it’s not just money that is making young cricketers vulnerable to such acts. “It is not just about money. It is about temptations. There are lot of things that are attached to it,” the legendary leg-spinner said.
Kumble strongly opposed the idea of legalising sports betting in India. “I don’t like to associate myself with betting, be it legal or not. And I am not one who likes to treat sportsperson like horses,” he concluded.
