The doping scandal at the school level got bigger on Thursday with eight more athletes, five of them boxers, testing positive for banned substances in the National School Games, taking the total number of offenders to 11 at the event.

Out of the 31 samples tested in boxing, five of them returned positive for banned substance stanozolol, Methylhexaneamine and nandrolone. Three wresters, too, were caught for the intake of stanozolol. “The results of remaining 20 samples of weightlifting and 30 samples of boxing have also been received from NDTL. Out of 20 samples of weightlifting, three samples have found positive for stanozolol THC (marijuana) and out of 30 samples of boxing five samples have come positive for stanozolol THC (marijuana), methylhexaneamine, nandrolone substances,” NADA said in a statement on Thursday.

The wrestlers, who tested positive, are from Punjab, UP and Maharashtra. And the weightlifters, who failed the test on Wednesday, are from Punjab and Delhi while the boxers hail from Manipur, Punjab and Maharashtra, the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) said in a release.

The NADA will also be conducting dope tests at Ludhiana (Guru Nanak Stadium) where the athletics event of the 57th National School Games is being held currently.

“The total of 11 positive out of the 80 cases indicates a percentage of 14 per cent positive out of the total samples taken which is very high trend and is much higher than the national average of four per cent,” the statement added.
