Mumbai: Sourav Ganguly believes Mahendra Singh Dhoni should bat up the order. Little Master Sunil Gavaskar, whose views are regarded as the 'Bible' of Indian cricket, has backed Ganguly's comments. Adam Gilchrist also thinks that Dhoni will be most effective up the order.
"In one-day cricket you need the best batsman to get the maximum overs and build on from there. So applying that logic, Dhoni should bat up the order for the team's benefit only," Gavaskar said at the Sahara Indian Sports Awards function at a city hotel on Tuesday.
Dhoni, who batted at No.5 in the last ODI and scored 34 off 46, perhaps will have to give it a second thought particularly after the Little Master cited the instance of Sachin Tendulkar. "When India needed Sachin to bat up the order, he came to open the innings and that helped India win many matches," Gavaskar said.
However, the Indian skipper doesn't think he will be able to find place up the order.. "It's a difficult choice to make. To bat every time at number three or four is difficult for me, it depends on the individuals," Dhoni said on the eve of the second One-day International on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Adam Gilchrist said, "He's (Dhoni) such a dangerous player. I would like to see him bat up the order especially in the abbreviated versions of the game. You want your best batsmen to face as many deliveries as possible," Gilchrist, who was here as the brand ambassador for the University of Wollongong, said.
"He has a lot on his plate, I understand that. He has to lead the side...he's good finisher too...and there are a lot of expectations. But I would encourage him to bat higher up, ideally at No. 3 or No. 4," Gilchrist said.
