Harpreet Singh’s gold medal in the men’s 25m centre fire pistol individual event was overshadowed by the controversy that took place during the shoot-off, when the Aussie mistakenly shot in Singaporean Meng Lip Poh’s target, at the Karni Singh Shooting Range here on Sunday.

After the infamous behaviour by wrestler Hassene Fkiri, came one more embarrassment for Australia, when its shooter Michelangelo Giustiniano was left red-faced after cross firing in Singaporean shooter Meng’s target in the shoot-off for the silver and bronze medal.

Harpreet was pronounced the clear winner after he scored 580 (288 precision, 292 rapid) in the final.

Interestingly, the contest for the second and third spot saw a lot of drama as four shooters were tied four-way for the second spot. Vijay, along with Meng, England’s Michael Gault and Australia’s Michelangelo Giustiniano shot 574 points. As a result, the shooters were asked to shoot in the shoot-off round.

In the shoot-off, Vijay shot 49/50 and after getting zero in the first and 17 from three shots, Michael withdrew his contest. But, things became complicated when Giustiniano mistakenly cross fired all his five shots in Meng’s target, who was standing next to him and that took the Singaporean’s score above 50, while the Australian’s target displayed zero.

After the cross fire, Giustaniano was given a zero, while the jury came together and saw the paper target behind the electronic target and sorted out the straight shots and the cross ones to award 48 points to Meng.

At the end, Vijay was awarded with the silver medal, while Meng had to be content with the bronze.

Manavjit Singh Sandhu’s 144 in the men’s trap individual event was not enough to win the gold. England’s Aaron Heading scored 147 to finish first, while Australia’sMichael Diamond shot 146 to finish 2nd.

In the women’s 10m air rifle individual event, Indian shooters Suma Shirur and Kavitha Yadav disappointed as they could not win a medal.
