The talk in IPL circles is not just about the future of Team Kochi or about the appeals filed by Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab.

There is a strong buzz over the retention of players. More precisely, who’s staying where.

It is more or less confirmed that Sourav Ganguly will no longer be part of Kolkata Knight Riders. The question is which team will bid for him. Kochi could be an option — if the team survives, that is. In the Capital, intense parleys are on between Delhi Daredevils and Virender Sehwag. The dashing opener may continue to remain a Daredevil, but the final word is not yet out. There is no word yet from Hyderabad either but it is understood that the Deccan Chargers are planning to go to the auction with full purse.

Ditto with Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Vijay Mallya-owned team is unlikely to retain anybody, although some say he is  looking at the likes of Ross Taylor, Virat Kohli and Robin Uthappa.

But the question there is whether anyone of them is worth losing $1.8 million from the $9 million spend cap.

From Mumbai, Kieron Pollard, apart from Sachin Tendulkar, looks certain to be retained. The other two names are still not known.

What one does know is who Chennai are going to retain. The IPL champions are most likely to retain MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Albie Morkel. The fourth place could be a toss-up between Murali Vijay and R Ashwin, but the India opener might get the early nod.

Chennai Super Kings owner N Srinivasan, currently in Dubai for an ICC meeting, could not be contacted, but a team official said this could be the line-up. “A couple of names are common sense. We will finalise the list after a discussion with skipper Dhoni,” said Kasi Viswanath, a key CSK official.
