Even as the final of the third edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was underway at the DY Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai, a note was being prepared by senior officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It contained the suspension orders for Lalit Modi as IPL chairman as well as removal from his post as vice-president of BCCI.

Reliable sources confirmed these developments to DNA even though no member of the BCCI was willing to come on record before the note was actually delivered. “If the president wants, he can suspend him at any time,” was how one member put it, virtually agreeing that a midnight axe is likely to fall on the beleaguered IPL chairman.

After hours and hours of deliberation, planning and investigation, the BCCI is believed to have prepared a watertight chargesheet against the IPL chairman. It is expected to come out with documentary evidence of everything that is being speculated in the media — Modi’s role in the Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and other franchises. There have also been investigations in various deals signed by Modi, including the World Sports Group-Sony deal. The governing council may recommend a new name or a committee to oversee the functioning of the IPL.
It is most likely the BCCI will invoke rule 32 of the cricket body’s constitution which empowers the president to take action against any member/ player/umpire on various grounds. The board president can immediately suspend a member by issuing a showcause notice. The suspension could be followed by an inquiry and hearing before the disciplinary committee which will report to the general body.

The chargesheet has been prepared by legal luminaries like Arun Jaitley and Shashank Manohar.

Some of the charges are lack of transparency in his functioning, financial irregularities, breach of confidentiality and misconduct. There are also question marks over the cheergirls’ issue.

“We will discuss all the issues and answer all your queries tomorrow,” BCCI president Shashank Manohar said, referring to a press conference called by the board for noon on Monday. He, however, ruled out an immediate convening of a general body which means the board will take up the matter at its annual general meeting in September. The rule provides time up to six moths for the ratification of the action.

These events transpired even as Modi took the board by surprise on Monday by announcing that he would attend the meeting. He also said he has sent out an agenda for the governing council meeting.  “On the agenda will be a discussion on any complaints received in writing from members of the governing council (GC) against the chairman, other members of the council and/or the BCCI,” he said in a statement. “Members of the GC have been requested to give all such complaints in writing with the requisite supporting documents at the meeting on the morning of April 26 to the chairman and commissioner, so they can be replied in full.”
