The Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) ‘A’ defeated HPCL A 4-0 in the fifth and final round to claim the team title in the XXIII PSPB inter-unit chess tournament here on Monday.

BPCL A won the title with 10 match points and 15 and a half game points after five rounds and were followed by BPCL B, who defeated Oil India 3-1, to tally eight match points and 15 and half game points.
ONGC A and IOC A, who enjoyed the joint lead over the first two days, played out a 2-2 draw in the fifth and final round to relinquish the lead. ONGC A finished third with seven match points and 15 game points, while IOC finished fourth, also with seven match points and 15 game points.
Top seed and Grand Master K Sasikiran (ELO 2685) of ONGC A, with white pieces, played well against GM Abhijit Kunte of IOC A in the Grunfeld defence game. Shasikiran beat Kunte in 50 moves.
Also scoring fluent wins in the first round of the individual event were the fancied names like K Sashikaran, Surya Shekhar Ganguly, Niloptal Das and Abhieet Kunte.
